GPS Savior

The south of France is a beautiful area and I found myself there a year ago with friends enjoying the long end to summer in Europe. Wanting to get off the usual beaten track followed by tourist and travel companies, I made the choice of a bed and breakfast in a tiny village near the walled city of Carcassonne. Friends offered me a car to get around all the rural villages and towns but I declined. Not being able to read French I was concerned I would cause an accident or get lost in the country lanes or town streets.
That was until they showed me the GPS Navigation Unit fitted to the car and how it worked. It was so simple and easy to follow. The instructions were clear and communicated well before the need to turn or change lanes. I tried it by venturing just a few kilometres and quickly gained confidence in the unit. The town of Carcassonne is absolutely beautiful but not necessarily easy to navigate without a good map showing the one-way systems. The Gps Unit solved all that.
The other benefit of the GPS unit was finding the local railway station (for a day trip to Montpelier), the old Cite and local restaurants. I spent my time there discovering magical off-the-beaten track villages, country idylls and thoroughly enjoyed the freedom the car and GPS provided.
I know ask for a GPS if I ever rent a vehicle. I also look at them as a gift-giving solution for those hard-to-buy-for people in my life. The range of GPS units available range in price but the overall purchase is for a portable and very effective tool that means I enjoy venturing outside to new places.
