Electronic navigation – handheld GPS review
For the people who like outdoor games, the GPS handheld device is a very important outdoor gear. Any kind of qualified GPS can realize the exact positioning. However, the navigation can’t be realized by the basic GPS positioning function. The navigation is accomplished through three basic data – directing, positioning and geographical information. The data can be gained in many ways. But it makes no sense to use one of them singly.
GPS can be used for positioning while the compass can be used for directing. And the geographical information can be gained by visual inspection, map, written texts and GPS track.
The map function has become the main function of handheld GPS. The handheld model without map is not attractive to the amateurs. Generally speaking, the handheld model with map is highly cost effective. Have you got tired of the pure black and white map? Maybe it’s time to give up the old style GPS navigation. You may come to the color screen ones. How would you make a choice with so many kinds of color handheld models with different shapes and features?
There are six models belonging to three series of Garmin Company. GPS MAP60C has 56MB internal memory, 256 color transflective TFT screen with 160*240 resolution. It has usb, parallel port and MCX antennal interface. MAP60CS even has electromagnetic compass and barometer. You can get the direction information with the compass and learn the weather condition by calculate the atmospheric pressure with barometer.
GPS MAP76C owns 115MB internal memory, 256 color transflective TFT screen with 160*240 resolution, usb, parallel port and MCX antennal interface. The MAP76CS also has electromagnetic compass and barometer. The series feature with firmness, reliability and preciseness.
Etrex Legend C has 24MB memory, 176*220 reflective TFT color screen, USB interface. Based on the eTrex Legend C, Etrex Vista C has additional electromagnetic compass and barometer. The color Screen Gps handheld series feature with small size and light weight.
Magellan Company. The Meridian Color edition has 16 color screen with 120*160 resolution, supports SD/MMC card, and MCX external antennal interface. The capacity is endless as it supports SD/MMC card.
SporTrak Color edition has 32MB internal memory, 16 color screen with 160*240 resolution, parallel port, electromagnetic compass and barometer. And it’s very cost effective.
eXplorist 500/600 owns 16 color transflective TFT screen and supports SD/MMC card. It’s portable and easy to use.
Lowrance company. iFINDER PhD C has 256 color screen with 160*240 resolution and supports SD/MMC card, parallel port and MCX external antennal interface. iFINDER H20 is known for its favorable price.
iFINDER MAP&MUSIC C has 256 color screen with 160*240 resolution. It supports SD/MMC card, parallel port and MCX external antennal port. The model supports mp3 playback and the songs are stored on the SD/MMC card.
Holux Company. GM-308 /GM-309 has 2.7 inch super large 4096 color screen with 160*240 resolution. It uses the 20 channel SiRF Star III and can support up to 4G CF card. GM-309 has built-in electromagnetic compass and barometric altimeter.
